Michelle’s Tips for the Perfect, Long Lasting Curls!

A very commonly asked question I get from my brides to be is “Will my curls stay?”

If I am doing your hair, I can promise you, the curls will stay. They will stay so well in fact, you may even be able to take them on your honeymoon with you! Since I don’t have the pleasure of doing all of the curls out there, I hope my helpful tips will resound on the day of your wedding (or special event) to keep every last hair in place!

With these 5 “CURLY, GIRLY” rules of thumb you will be in shock at the end of the night when your hair looks exactly like it did when it was first done. 

#1) Don’t Touch! I cannot stress this enough. The top secret is simple. Hands off! When being done by a professional, your hair is in done in such a way that every piece is strategically placed and sprayed. Even for those natural, I’m a ‘Victoria’s Secret Model’ looks. The oils in your hands (caused my perspiration, eating, touching anything and everything) add unwanted weight and buildup to your curly coif. Do your self a favor and leave your hair alone! Oh and don’t let anyone else touch it either! Your wedding day is not the day to have people playing with your hair (hubby included).

#2) Turn up the Heat! There is no way you will get a curl to last if the initial curl is not done by a VERY hot professional grade curling iron. Sorry ladies but a curling iron bought in a pharmacy just doesn’t get hot enough. This is the answer as to why you can’t curl your hair alone. The tool isn’t hot enough to lock in the curl.  My favorite site for professional curling tools is Best Clippers. Check them out! In my professional opinion, curls done with a ¾ inch or 1 inch Marcel iron are the most long-lasting.

#3) Don’t pre-heat your curls.  Setting your hair in hot rollers then re-curling it is just a waste of time. As is flat ironing your whole head then re-curling it. Heat is good but too much will make the hair flop. Your hair can only take so much in one sitting. Abusing the hair before attempting to lock in the perfect curl will just cause your curls to droop (if you can even get a curl out of it). One HUGE piece of advice – do not flat iron your hair before your hair trial or on the day of your wedding before your hair is done by your stylist. Your best bet is to let your hair air dry with some light product(a thickening mousse or leave in conditioner). My favorite leave-in product is Whipped Crème by Sebastion.

#4)Aerosol Only. Aerosol is the way to go when it comes to hairspray! Make sure you purchase a travel sized can for touch-ups throughout the day. The hairspray isn’t what gets the curl to hold- the heat does -  but the hairspray will keep it looking fresh and crisp. Just don’t O.D on the Spritz! A little goes a long day. Make sure you are holding it 4-6 inches away or else it will look too wet and shiny! My favorite hairspray, hands down, is Matrix Vavoom.

#5) Be conscious of the weather. We all love the look of long, flowing curls and all but get real if you are planning your wedding in the dead of summer and you live in a climate where it gets quite warm. You may want to trade off a curly down ‘do for an elegant up-do to avoid the curls sticking to your neck and flopping. No matter how great the hairstylist and how awesome the hairspray – the 105 degree heat always wins.
