Don’t Anile your trial! My guide to Headache Free Bridal Hair

October 18, 2013

By Michelle Surgent

One of the most frustrating situations I find myself in is convincing my bridal clients that I can give them what they want after they have had a bad experience.

Clients that have had a bad experience call, email and yes even text in a panic thinking that everyone in the bridal equity business is going to make them look like their so called “bad experience”. 9 times out of 10 it’s the hair, not the make-up. So lets talk about that!

I thought long and hard as to how I can communicate my philosophy on bridal hair. If you’re reading this, I’m not selling myself but simply sharing my professional experience. If you hire me you won’t be disappointed (obviously) but make sure you take the time to think about these things before you take the plunge and schedule your trial. They are all important factors to take into consideration- your wedding is a huge investment of your time and money. Your beauty process should be too. Cocktail hour Food gets digested. Drinks get Drank. Flower bouquets wilt… But Pictures are forever! How your hair and makeup looks on your wedding day is unforgettable. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Focus on the everlasting.

Before you Book a Hair Vendor:

1. Ask around. The best referrals come from word of mouth.

2. Don’t feel obligated to use your regular stylist if she doesn’t specialize in bridal hair. It may ruin your relationship if she says she can give you what you want and can’t do it n

3. Google their name.  Does this artist have a web site? Blog? Facebook? Do you like the work you see?

4. READ REVIEWS. It’s always good practice to see what everyone else is saying about their personal experience. Take everything with a grain of salt. Make sure that the negative comments (if any) aren’t deal breakers for you. Some people give a 1 out of 5-stars for the artist running 5 minutes late or for not returning an email within 24 hours. Weddings stylists are just as much human as you. I have seen the same nonsense on wedding sites as on trip advisor and yelp. Always go with your gut and focus on the important stuff!!

5.Does this person own a salon? Work out of a salon? Come to you? All of these factors are important. Don’t waste your time pursuing an artist if you want them to come to your location and it’s not something they do.

Quick tip. Just because a salon offers bridal services doesn’t mean they have mastered it. If they don’t have photos and reviews they probably aren’t as experienced as they are claiming. Remember : a picture is worth a thousand words.

The Trial Process

After you have considered steps 1-5 above, schedule your trial. In my professional opinion, start with one at a time. Nothing is more frustrating to me then someone who comes to me after having 4-5 hair trials with 4-5 different artists. This is frustrating because it’s telling me you don’t know what you want and I probably can’t give it to you. A case of “analysis paralysis” is hard to cure. With trials, less is more. Be sure to communicate clearly and concisely what you want to your artist. Make sure they are a good listener. That is half the battle. The other half is of course, talent!

If the first artist doesn’t work out, then pursue a different but don’t go on a trial binge (or even schedule one for that matter until you know the following :

1. Your dress

2. Do you want your hair up or down?

3. Do you need extensions to execute your dream style?

4. Does your fiancé have a preference how you wear your hair? His opinion matters too!

5. Did you check our Pinterest , Instagram or other creative sites to find inspiration photos

6. Do these photos somewhat resemble your coloring? Even if a blonde and a brunettes updo if done exactly the same way by the same person will never ever look the same!!

7. When do you want to do a trial? Don’t get upset if your artist won’t meet with you on a weekend. That means they are busy with other bridal jobs!! I do 4-6 weddings a weekend and believe me, you don’t want me doing a trial on you after I’ve worked on 25-35 clients over the course of a weekend. If you are really tired after work consider taking a half day or going into work late. Communicate with your artist to make it work. You can have world’s best trial but if you had a rough day in the office nothing will make you feel good (except wine) 😉

8. Confirm the date is available with your artist. If you can’t come in for a trial right away or maybe you trust their work and want to wait to closer to your date…ask if they offer booking options.

Quick tip : bring a camera to the trial. Make sure the artist is also documenting your trial so you can both recreate and/or make adjustments day of.

Ok you love the trial….. Now what?

Do you like the artist as a person? Can you trust them? If yes follow below:

1. Confirm the date is available. Confirm the start and finish time.

2. Sign a contract. It is my professional advice you do not work with someone who doesn’t put their terms in writing.

3. Confirm pricing.

4. Make sure they work with other hairstylists if you have a large group. Ask what the other hairstylist’s credentials are.

5. Ask what the contingency plan is if there is an emergency. Ask for it to be in writing if it isn’t already.

6. Ask if they provide a schedule. If they don’t, ask if you may create one to keep things on time. If they do, ask when you can expect to get it from them.

7. Confirm payment options and also make sure you know how much everything is going to be that day!

The purpose of this article is to help you ad to keep you stress free. I hope you took a little something g from it. I have been working with brides since 2001 and I’ve gained a lot of insight on such matters. I hope this will help you avoid a horrific experience. Not all hairdressers are the same and styles have come a long way since the 90’s prom hair 😉
